284049, (RFR/CH/B/1005) Petty Officer Stoker, HMS Hawke. Born 12th October 1875, Winterton. Died 15th October 1914. Commemorated on Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.
"A memorial service for Mr David Lonsdale, first-class petty officer, who was drowned in the loss of H.M.S. Hawke, was held at Attercliffe Baptist Church, Sheffield, last night. Mr Lonsdale had been a worshipper at Attercliffe for several years and had been a full member of the church since March last. The service was conducted by the Rev. Leonard J. E. Smith, who in his sermon referred to the well-known strength of character of Mr Lonsdale. Without any feeble sentiment, but with a virile Christian manhood, he had said in one of his letters, 'Wherever I am I shall always put the Master first'. Mrs Lonsdale (widow), three brothers of the deceased petty officer, and other members of the family were present. Mr Lonsdale, it is understood, is the first Free Church member in Sheffield who has died in a naval action in the present war."
